The Legend of Orpheus
The Legend of Orpheus
The story of Orpheus is an old and beloved Slavic myth, originating from Bulgaria's Rhodope Mountains region. It is said that Orpheus was a handsome and talented musician who played the lyre so beautifully, that the gods and wild beasts were enchanted by his music. When his beloved wife Eurydice died, Orpheus traveled to the Underworld to try and bring her back to life. There he charmed Hades, the god of the Underworld, and was granted Permission to release Eurydice, but made Orpheus swear not to look at her until they were out of the underworld. As he and Eurydice came out into the light of day, the unfortunate Orpheus was tempted and turned to see if Eurydice was behind him. His lover is gone forever.
